Artillery.

Neither sides were supported with tanks which made it harder. Once inside the trench line, troops of both forces were forced to eliminate bunkers individually, using hand grenades, explosive charges, and occasionally flame throwers. Most of the time they would attack on dark nights. They also used rifles, machine guns and pistols.
